Wymondham nature group

From The Chair

As Chair, I would like to welcome everyone to our local group. You do not need to be an expert on wildlife, just come and enjoy it. We hold nine illustrated talks a year on subjects covering all aspects of wildlife and wild places. The talks are held in Wymondham at 7.30pm on the second Thursday of the month (except during June, July and August). There is a friendly committee which you might like to be part of or you could join one of our conservation teams. We are also involved in informing and educating the public about wildlife conservation and biodiversity and engaging with the local planning system.

The local area of South Norfolk is made up of a several historic market towns set in typical South Norfolk ‘Claylands’ farming countryside to river valleys/broad areas towards the Suffolk border. The ancient abbey town of Wymondham is set in a valley between two rivers, the Tiffey and Bays and surrounded by a Local Nature Reserve, 16 County Wildlife Sites and several small woodlands that are valuable habitats for both flora and fauna. Water vole, otters, kingfisher, great crested newts and various species of orchids are often to be spotted along the river valleys and on many of the natural sites surrounding the town.
Apart from the indoor meetings we run several market stalls a year, hold raffles, plant sales and produce a group magazine, Swift, to fund raise for the Trust. In the last year we have held an Open Garden event and an Art Exhibition to fundraise. The group also carries out conservation work on four sites, NWT Lower Wood, Ashwellthorpe SSSI, NWT Hethel Old Thorn (The UK's smallest nature reserve), Hethel Churchyard and Tolls Meadow LNR (fen meadow owned by Wymondham Town Council). We also help out at ‘Wild About Norfolk’ a country wide event by running the Sensory section with ‘hands on’ displays of wildlife objects, sounds and smells of nature. Over the last few years we have engaged fully with the local planning system to make sure that the best interests of nature & natural spaces are preserved and provided for Wymondham.

We were delighted to accept the permanent loan of a laptop computer and a projector. This has been supplied and paid for by Jon Carpenter, the Managing Director of Morgan-Price International Healthcare. He runs a business in Wymondham employing  several local people.

The picture shows our chairperson, Dr Anne Edwards receiving the items from Mrs Ann Carpenter the mother of Jon, who was unable to attend due to pressure of work, also in the picture is Mrs Ann Roberts a trustee of NWT.

We use a projector and a laptop at most of our meetings. Some speakers have their own equipment but many don’t.  Also we have problems with some incompatibility with equipment brought to meetings. It is very pleasant to have our own equipment ready to use.
