Pyramidal orchid Anacamptis pyramidalis

Whilst the pyramidal orchid is declining in number like many other orchid species, it is actually tolerant of the activities of people. Thus it may be found on roadsides, roundabouts and in churchyards.

Conservation status

It has disappeared from 20% of its historical range. There was a reduction of 6.5% in the number of 10km squares where it was found from 1970-1986 (Harrap 2005-2009). The latter figure is moderated by its habit of turning up on roadsides and the like.

Details

Did you know?
In Britain the pyramidal orchid is a lowland species but in the Alps it has been recorded at heights of up to 2,000m. The rapid development of large colonies in new sites has been attributed to the number of seeds produced; this has been estimated at 35,000 from a single spike.
