Centrica work party in the Wissey Living Landscape

Friday 14 November, 2014

Staff from Centrica King’s Lynn Power Station visited the Wissey Valley Living Landscape in the Fens to aid Norfolk Wildlife Trust in creating its new wetland. NWT is working with Environment Agency to develop reedbeds to compensate for the anticipated loss of such habitat on the coast.

In good weather conditions the team planted a 30m mixed hedge and 16 oak trees at the eastern end of the northern boundary of the Methwold site, complete with tree guards. This completes this tree-lined boundary which bats can use for foraging. A small tit flock were already using the hedge later in the day. This woodland strip holds the only nightingale territory on the site and is widely used by other woodland species.

In the afternoon the team moved onto the Hilgay site where they planted 1,500 reed plugs in the northeast corner and in the lagoon area. The latter is now being filled with water over the winter which should ensure the survival of the reeds. Most of the reeds were planted within existing caged areas to prevent grazing by deer and waterfowl.

Nick Carter, NWT Wetland Project Officer said: “Corporate work parties give a real boost with all the practical work that needs doing on a conservation project of this scale. The reed planting will increase the speed of spread of these plants across the site which means we will attract bitterns and marsh harriers, the two target species, to the site quicker. The hedge and tree planting will compensate for some of the trees that will be lost during the construction of the reedbed and maintain the wooded landscape in this unique part of the Fens.”

Graham Avey of Centrica said: “The staff of King’s Lynn Power Station have worked closely with the NWT over the last years on Environmental projects and it has become a feature of staff team building and working within the community. We are pleased to be able to provide assistance in local projects of this kind. It provides a welcome break from daily activities while building a strong relationship with Centrica site staff and the NWT. We hope to be able to continue this relationship in the future.

Employee volunteering with Norfolk Wildlife Trust is a fantastic opportunity for staff team building and personal development outside of the normal working environment. It is also a great, interactive way for companies to make a positive and practical difference to local wildlife.
