Mid Norfolk Local Group
A message from the Chair
Welcome to all!
From October to April, we hold an indoor meeting in Dereham on the first Tuesday of each month. The topics and presentations vary, sometimes being quite specialised while at other times being more general.
Outdoor summer events include a fundraising stall held in Dereham in early May, and several guided walks at a place of interest, within a reasonable travelling distance. We hold our unique Hoe Bird Walk on the third Sunday of every month. For about 30 years, observers from our group have recorded the bird life in the Hoe Common area. All are welcome to join this group of enthusiasts!
We hope to see you soon.

About the group
The main aims of the Mid Norfolk Local Group are:
- to provide opportunities for interested people to gather, socialise and hear talks from experts on wildlife topics
- to encourage all age groups to visit places of importance to wildlife conservation and biodiversity
- to raise funds to protect Norfolk's wildlife and wild spaces
Our local area
Dereham is situated at the centre of the county, so our group is well named!
There are some relatively small NWT nature reserves in this area: Hoe Rough, Honeypot Wood and Scarning Fen, with Foxley Wood and Thursford Wood being near its margin.
The River Wensum flows through this region, and several past and present sand and gravel extraction sites provide interesting habitats. Lengthy footpaths are few and far between in this area, although quiet country lanes are almost as good.
