About the event

Using the traditional techniques associated with besom-broom making, you will construct this delightful bird from birch twigs and hazel wood. All materials will be provided and you will join Dr Tim on a short walk in the woodlands of NWT Hickling Broad reserve, exploring the sources for the materials and how they were traditionally harvested and prepared. After the walk, you will learn how to grade and bind the birch twigs and how to sculpt birch bundles using the technique of heat bending. During the next stage, you will work on the hazel wood to make the legs, head and base, before final assembly using hidden doweled joints. Suitable for ages 16 and above.

Please bring footwear and clothing suitable for outdoor working. Also, gardening gloves and eye protection will be useful for working with some of the materials.

Please bring lunch - light refreshments are available to purchase at the visitor centre.
